Nirpal Bhogal, director de “Firstborn”



Daniel Espinosa (entrevistador de “Cementerio de Noticias”)  El estreno europeo de la película aconteció en el marco del Sitges Film Festival 2016; ¿qué supuso para ti que un certamen tan prestigioso como éste decidiera incluir tu trabajo para formar parte de su programa, concretamente en la siempre atractiva sección Panorama Fantàstic?

Nirpal Bhogal (director de “Firstborn”)  It’s a wonderful festival filled with amazing people, for me it’s one of the few festivals where I feel like it’s for an audience, not just for critics; it’s very exciting to see people.

D.E.  Cinco años atrás, con “Sket”, te sumergiste en un drama criminal; ¿qué te ha hecho abandonar dicho género y adentrarte en el de terror?

N.B.  “Sket” was in itself a crime thriller, which I find quite close to horror, the only difference is that it had a very strong sense of our current reality whereas in “Firstborn” I had to create a new reality for the audience; I don’t think they are that far apart, in fact there is a version of “Sket” that could work if the antagonist was superlative supernatural.



D.E.  Las referencias fílmicas son irremediables e incluso necesarias a la hora de urdir un metraje; ¿cuáles han sido las tuyas para la ocasión?

N.B.  I adore classic horror movies; films like “Carnival of souls”, “The innocents”, “Jacobs ladder” and “Candyman” are all strong influences.



D.E.  Los niños como canales del mal son todo un clásico; ¿qué otros elementos del género crees que pueden observarse durante la obra?

N.B.  The challenge of horror is that the things we are still scared of today are the things our ancestors were scared of, so the stories have been told again and again; there are few original ideas, the challenge of a good writer or director is to give ideas magnifical original executions.



D.E.  En el cartel oficial puede verse una muñeca y cierta advertencia...; ¿hasta qué punto estos dos detalles cobran relevancia?

N.B.  As a director I get little say in the poster, I don’t believe relevant.



D.E.  Es de esperar que durante la grabación de este tipo de largometrajes, en los que se tratan fenómenos paranormales, sucedan anécdotas; ¿podrías citar alguna que te impactara especialmente?

N.B.  We had many small incidents, many crew members felt someone pinching them on set, while writing it I witnessed many strange things including accidents and deaths; however, a large part of me believes that much of this is perception bias, in that while our brains are thinking in a certain way (in this case horror) we take scenarios to make horrific.



D.E.  Tus seguidores estarán deseando conocer el próximo proyecto en el que tomes parte; ¿tienes alguno planeado para un futuro próximo?

N.B.  I have a horror film coming up called “Tapes” that I am very excited by, a sci-fi television series and an adaptation of popular novel.



D.E.  Las dos películas que has firmado hasta la fecha proceden de tu país natal, el Reino Unido; ¿tienes planeado dirigir alguna pieza fuera de dicho territorio para expandir tus horizontes y darte a conocer más?

N.B.  I want to direct movies everywhere!; I envision making movies in Spain, Italy, Kenya and the United States in the near, very near, future.
